Dr. Rowan Hillson MBE MD FRCP

National Clinical Director for Diabetes 2008 – 2013,  Consultant diabetologist The Hillingdon Hospital 1989 - 2012

Dr Hillson was appointed National Clinical Director for Diabetes (Diabetes Tsar) at the Department of Health in June 2008 on a part-time basis continuing as a Consultant Diabetologist at The Hillingdon Hospital, Uxbridge until Autumn 2012.  It is here that she established a successful local district-wide diabetes service based on Diabeticare, working with the Hillingdon Diabetes Team. She has written books on diabetes for people with diabetes and for professionals.

As Diabetes Tsar she established the National Diabetes Information Service, chairing the partnership board. She greatly expanded the amount of information available to expose the variations in diabetes care across England. Told of a fatal insulin error she established the safe use of insulin project – over 102,000 healthcare professionals have now enrolled in the e-learning course.  Other NCD Diabetes projects include improving inpatient diabetes care, better pregnancy outcomes, improving diabetes care in children and young people, better diabetes management in primary care, and vigorous action to reduce amputations. Overall, her work aims to improve health and well being for everyone with diabetes in England.

Rowan continues to work with the Royal College of Physicians and Diabetes UK.
